The Best of Both Worlds: How to Experience Old & New Marrakech

March 11, 2020

When the city of Marrakech comes up in discussion, many images may come to mind. Some may immediately visualize the city’s alleyways and mosques, while others may think of museums, marketplaces and even movie locations.

The reality is that Marrakech is a hub of all the aforementioned sights and more with old and modern quarters. In this post, we’ll take a quick look at both these areas and our destination picks that travellers should visit.

The Old City of Marrakech

The Old City of Marrakech offers visitors a rich experience by virtue of an assortment of cultural, historical and touristic attractions. This section of the city is fortified and packed with vendors and stalls. The old city (and Medina) was turned into a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Many of the buildings in the Old City have since been renovated.

A stroll through the old city takes place within city walls and narrow alleyways with stellar views of landmarks dating back to the 12th century. The Old City is ideal for those who want a glimpse into Marrakech’s past or want to learn more about the Five Pillars of Islam. It’s also the ideal locale for those looking to lose themselves in city streets or shop for exotic goods in the city.

Things to Do in Marrakech & Places to Visit in the Old City

The Modern City of Marrakech

The “other side” of Marrakech is also just as vibrant as the old city but aesthetically quite different. This side of Marrakech is centred around the contemporary scene that began in the early 20th century, which was essentially a French area.

It is a thriving centre for art, design, fashion, and entrepreneurship. Travellers will encounter familiar retail stores here such as Zara and H&M, along with popular fast-food chains like Starbucks and McDonalds. For visitors who want to feel like they’re in New York City or Paris in Africa, this portion of the city provides that vibe.

Marrakech: A Twofold Wonder

For travellers who are looking for things to do in Marrakech, they can rest assured that there is no shortage of attractions to see. History and culture buffs alike will lose themselves in the wonders of the old city, while contemporary and artsy-folk will feel energized walking through its modern areas. Both sides of the city will provide plenty of photo opportunities and memories that will stick with visitors for a lifetime!

We advise travellers to consult a guide on their excursions to get the most out of these attractions. Here at Le Farnatchi, we can make arrangements for visitors to see all the great sites of this wonderful city as well as help with booking drivers, guides and much more.

How to Shop Frugally in Marrakech By Haggling

January 15, 2020

The shops and souks of Marrakech offer an infinite selection of goods ranging from houseware to fashion accessories. A stroll through one of these bustling markets would fill the senses with brightly coloured fabrics, aromatic fragrances and much more.

However, travellers might end up overspending in the Red City if they’re not careful. That’s why it’s beneficial if visitors to Marrakech learn the art of haggling before they arrive. It can help them save plenty of cash that they might otherwise blow.

Haggle Knowledge

For the timid folk among us, haggling may seem like an act best reserved for extroverts and dominant individuals. The reality is anyone can learn to haggle with a little effort.

Haggling is a valuable skill to have when shopping in Marrakech. The city’s shopkeepers are famous for their sales techniques, and they can charm shoppers into buying things they didn’t intend to – this is just the nature of sales etiquette in the Marrakech souks.

It’s therefore advantageous to master a few haggling tricks.

Walk the Haggler’s Walk

When haggling in a Marrakech souk, the first step is to look at several shops to get a better sense of the prices for items a buyer wants to purchase. Once a buyer has a better sense of an item’s price, they can then go to a stallholder of interest.

The shopper can test that vendor’s specific price point. If the vendor opens with a high price, then they might be trying to sell the item for more than its actual worth. In such an instance, a shopper can respectfully (“respectfully” being the keyword) admit that they know the price and then walk away.

The next part is crucial – the shopper has to walk right away from the vendor’s shop as this will make them believe that their prospective customer is actually leaving. Also, the shopper should not look back at the vendor or shop. They don’t need to be aggressive or offensive, but walking away with a straight face will likely motivate the vendor to re-open negotiations.

If the vendor shows interest in re-negotiating, the shopper should go back in a calm and composed manner. The shopper can then resume haggling and ask what the vendor’s new price is. The vendor will then suggest a price. At this point, the shopper should think about the new price for a few seconds and then reply with an offer that is 25% less than the vendor’s new price.

The vendor may agree to the new price. If not, the shopper will have to ask for another offer. If the vendor still refuses the new offer, then it will be in the shopper’s best interest to browse elsewhere.

Haggle Etiquette

The idea of trying to “disarm” a vendor might strike fear in the heart of a naturally timid person. Keep in mind, though, that there are rules of etiquette with haggling. When shoppers follow these rules, they will avoid the very thing they’re afraid of – offending or irritating a shopkeeper.

Haggle Etiquette

Happy Frugal Shopping

A stroll through the Marrakech souks and markets will introduce shoppers to a world of exotic and precious goods that may at times be a bit pricey. However, when visitors absolutely can’t resist one of these precious items, haggling comes in handy.

Marrakech shopkeepers are usually willing to negotiate prices as long as shoppers approach them in a manner they are comfortable with. If the haggling is done right, a visitor might walk away with the item they desire for significantly less than the asking price.

What to Pack for the Marrakech Climate

January 9, 2020

In a previous post, we discussed how varied the Marrakech climate and weather patterns can be. But the question remains: what should you pack in your suitcase to comfortably handle the Marrakech climate?

There are a few things to consider when packing your suitcase for a trek to Marrakech. Ultimately, you want to dress sensibly for the temperature and precipitation so that you’re not boiling (or getting goosebumps) when you arrive. However, you should also consider some other factors such as the activities you plan to participate in and the traditional customs of Marrakech.

Regarding Marrakech activities, there are land, sea, and air experiences, which will largely dictate what you should wear. Some quick research or contacting your place of accommodations beforehand will help you decide what to wear for these activities.

As for the traditional customs in Marrakech, certain styles of dress are frowned upon. For example, the locals of Morocco find it disrespectful when visitors (or anyone for that matter) reveal too much skin. Of course, this makes things tricky for visitors who want to dress comfortably for the hot Marrakech weather.

How can it be done?

December 23, 2019

The last thing a visitor might think of doing in Marrakech is taking a road trip, but doing so should sit near the top of a Morocco to-do list. Some of the most exciting adventures can occur on day trips from Marrakech to nearby cities and towns.

The variation in scenery ranging from the architecture to the landscape will dazzle visitors, and open a window into a world they may never have thought existed here. With that said, what are the best day trips from Marrakech to take?

 1. Marrakech to Essaouira

Essaouira.

A day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira is the perfect escape from the hustle-and-bustle pace of Marrakech. The journey to Essaouira lasts three hours, and upon arrival, visitors will see that the city is a beautiful coastal town nestled on Morocco’s Atlantic coast.

Travellers can navigate through the city’s vibrant blue-and-white medina or head over to its beaches to soak up the sun and the views of its colourful port and rolling waves. And when visitors have had their fill, they can lose themselves in Essaouira’s souks which are sectioned out like fish-bones and filled with a dazzling array of antiques.

 2. Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains

Atlas Mountains.

One of the best ways to appreciate the Moroccan landscape is to look at it from up high. In other words, you will see its full beauty at an elevated point, and there’s no other place to see such views than in the Atlas Mountains.

A typical day trip from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains will offer you a variety of scenery and attractions at various altitudes. For example, you may start in the tiny village of Imlil, which is nestled at the bottom of Mt. Toubkal, the highest mountain in the range. Of course, a day trip to the Atlas Mountains doesn’t have to end here.

Visitors can explore nearby Berber villages as part of a guided tour or climb the majestic, snow-capped heights of Mt.Toubkal itself. Even the trek back home to Marrakech is a visual treat, thanks to the views of the Ouirgan valley and its mix of desert, forests and the Oued Nfis river that runs through it.

 3. Marrakech to the Agafay Desert

Agafay Desert.

The next natural wonder to visit in Morocco is the Agafay Desert. The journey there is short but the stay might be a long one. It is a collage of unforgettable scenery including rolling dunes and foothills that present stunning views over the Lake Lalla Takerkoust and more. Travellers can go on camel rides, dune buggy rides, and have dinner under the evening sky and stars.

What You Should Know Before Climbing Mount Toubkal

December 15, 2019

There’s more to Marrakech (and Morocco) than its scrumptious tajine dishes, vibrant souks and Hollywood-esque film locations. Marrakech is the perfect getaway not only for culture buffs and foodies but also for adventurous types.

For visitors who want to see breathtaking panoramic views of the country Atlas mountains, a climb up Mt. Toubkal is the ultimate Moroccan experience. It is the perfect trifecta that every adventurous person craves – it’s challenging, exhilarating and unforgettable. In fact, a climb up Mt. Toubkal should go on any adventurer’s bucket list.

Facts About Mt. Toubkal

Located in southwestern Morocco, Mt. Toubkal is the tallest peak in the Atlas Mountains standing at 4,167 metres (13,671 ft) high. This makes it the tallest mountain peak in North Africa and the Arab World.

The first recorded ascent up Mt. Toubkal dates back to 1923 when three French explorers – Marquis de Segonzac, Vincent Berger and Hubert Dolbeau – made a climb to the mountain’s peak. However, it has been suggested that others may have reached the summit before the three Frenchmen did.

Fast forward to now, travellers from all walks of life visit Mt. Toubkal regularly, to challenge themselves and enjoy the majestic sights of Morocco from up high.

Interesting Facts About Mt. Toubkal

From the Drive to the Climb

The reality of getting to Mt. Toubkal and back is this – it can be a gruelling yet thrilling experience. It’s not for the faint of heart but it’s definitely a worthwhile trip for those who want something to brag about for the remainder of their lives. Also, who wouldn’t want to upload a jaw-dropping photo like this on their Instagram account?

Sitting on the peak of Mt. Toubkal.

But let’s talk about the trek.

Mt. Toubkal is 63km south of Marrakech. Climbers will get dropped off at the mountain village of Imlil, which serves as the starting point for the climb. Visitors will stay there for the first day. Afterwards, climbers will then go to the nearby village of Aroumd for the night, where they will eat and rest for the day ahead. In total, the trip will likely take place over the course of 3-5 days, although climbs that include nearby peaks can last up to 6-10 days.

Climbers will then begin the morning with their guide, who will prep them for a day of hiking. They will zigzag through the Ait Mizane Valley over the course of six hours but will occasionally stop for brief breaks and opportunities to take photos of the picturesque valley.

Along the way, visitors will navigate through steep and rocky paths, but they will be able to see stunning views of high peaks and scattered waterfalls. Apart from the scenery, climbers will get to see the Berber people in their villages and local wildlife.

The climb will then intensify.

Climbing Mt.Toubkal.

The mountainside gets steeper. The path towards the summit becomes more and more obscure, and masses of stone begin to stack on top of one another. The air gets thinner as climbers get closer to the peak, and they have to pace themselves so as not to get breathless.

However, as climbers get higher up the mountain, the sweeping views Toubkal provides become increasingly awe-inspiring. The summit itself is a snow-capped wonder and the surrounding peaks of the Atlas Mountains stretch into the horizon, farther than the eye can see.

An ascent up Mt. Toubkal will naturally bring out the beast in travellers but will reward them with exquisite displays of beauty.

Key Pointers to Think of Beforehand

The description above is by no means supposed to be a deterrent if anything, it should serve as an “advertisement” for those who are adventurous, love adrenaline and who want to take their vacation to new heights.

The Summit of Moroccan Experiences

Marrakech and the surrounding regions of Morocco offer travellers some of the most relaxing and stress-melting experiences in the world. However, those who love adventure will also find peace here, especially, on Mt. Toubkal. Once they conquer the climb and reach the peak, they will get to enjoy a stellar view that is unrivalled in North Africa and the Arab World.

Marrakech Weather: What to Expect

September 17, 2019

If one were to guess what the climate of Marrakech is like, it’s safe to say they’d think it’s arid and dry. And they’re not wrong. However, the climate and weather patterns of Marrakech change significantly throughout the year, and travellers coming in at different times may be in for a surprise.

If you’re about to visit the glorious Red City, it’s worth your while to learn about the Marrakech climate. By doing that, you won’t be in for a shock when you arrive. More importantly, you can pack the right items into your suitcase for a comfortable trip.

The Marrakech Climate

The city of Marrakech and Morocco as a whole sits in what’s known as a subtropical semi-desert (in the Sahara). Winters are mild but summers are hot. Since Marrakech is located 460 meters (1,500 feet) above sea level, the elevated altitude brings on cooler temperatures at night.

Between night and day, fluctuations in temperature can be dramatic. Southerly winds descend from the High Atlas Mountains  – the highest peak being Jebel Toubkal at 4,167 meters (13,671 feet). This can result in rapid temperature spikes on occasion. Also, the winds can lift sand and dust from the surrounding desert, producing minor sandstorms.

Rain doesn’t fall much in Marrakech, with an average of just 240 millimetres (9.5 inches) annually. One of the most consistent aspects of Marrakech weather is the sunshine – it’s typically sunny all year-round.

Marrakech Weather During the Winter

From December to February, temperatures are generally on the mild side. However, winter nights in Marrakech can get cold, sometimes below 5°C (41 °F) or even 0°C. During the winter, it’s not uncommon for the skies to be cloudy. With that said, winter doesn’t always feel like winter in Marrakech – winds blowing from the south raise the temperature to 30°C (86 °F).

Marrakech Weather During the Spring

From March to mid-June, Marrakech is warm and rather dry. Temperatures range from the mid-20s in March to the mid-30s towards the middle of June, although nighttime temperatures can still dip into the cold “range” around March. During the day, however, by April, winds from the south can boost temperatures into the 35-40°C range.

Marrakech Weather During the Summer

Summer begins in the middle of June and extends through to September. As you would imagine, summers in Marrakech give rise to the hottest, dryest and sunniest months of the year. Generally speaking, daytime temperatures hover around the 30s, although they occasionally dip below the 20s. However, it’s common for temperatures to reach scorching numbers, especially in July and August, in the mid-to-high 40-degree range.

Marrakech Weather During the Fall

From mid-September to November, there is a gradual decrease in temperature. Some days can still reach highs of 35°C (or more), but they tend to be milder – warm during the day and cool during the night. Rainfall increases during the fall and towards the end of the season (November), precipitation gets a tad heavier.

Plan Your Trip to Marrakech

When is the Best Time To Visit Marrakech?

January 23, 2019

As many travel guides and travelers themselves will tell you, a trip to Marrakech will take you to a different world. It’s a land full of stunning architecture, vast deserts, and dazzlingly colourful bazaars and town squares.

But of course, if you want to enjoy the best of Marrakech, you need to know when the best times to visit are. Ultimately, your best time to visit depends on what you want to see and do in Marrakech, but there are some general guidelines to follow.

Let us help ensure that your stay in Marrakech is as magical as it looks in movies and photos from social media.

Best Time To Visit Marrakech For Good Weather

Marrakech (and Morocco on the whole) has a diverse climate, which is a far cry from what many think about it due to its location in the Sahara Desert. Temperatures can get swelteringly hot, but can also get very cold. Also, the region gets very dry in the summer, but it can be quite cool in the winter months, so timing is important.

With that said, the best time to visit Marrakech for good weather is in the Spring (March to May), and Autumn (September to October). Temperatures are balanced during these months with warm days and cool nights. You won’t boil during your daytime excursions, neither will you shiver at night. Additionally, the sunshine is bright and consistent during these times of the year.

Best Time To Visit Marrakech To Avoid Crowds

Walking along crowded streets and in cramped marketplaces can greatly diminish a travel experience, and that is certainly true in Marrakech. At peak travel periods, the flux of visitors can mean long waiting times to get access to popular attractions.

The quietest times to visit Marrakech are January to early February, June to July, and most of December. The winter months can be cool, but this is also perfect if you want to be out exploring rather than soaking up the sun.

Best Time for Flight Discounts to Marrakech

In an ideal world, we’d be able to rack up enough travel rewards and fly for “free”, but that’s not a realistic expectation. The next best bet is to find discounts on flight prices. That’s the best time to find flights and more. Of course, timing is one of the biggest factors in finding more affordable ticket fees, but so is your location.

The winter months (January to early February), early-mid summer (June and July) and most of December are when flight prices can drop. This correlates with the fact that tourism slows down during these periods, so ticket prices and accommodations will naturally fall.

However, keep in mind that this varies considerably from location to location. Using a tool like Google Flights can help in this regard.

If you have flexibility in your schedule, search for multiple dates with these tools to find a schedule that works for you and your traveling partner(s).

The cheapest flights often come from budget/discount airlines or involve trips with layovers/stopovers. If that’s not your cup of tea, it is better to spend more for the sake of comfort.

Best Time to See Marrakech Events & Attractions

There are certain times of the year where must-see events are taking place in Marrakech that, you may want to schedule your visit around.

Take for example an excursion to the Atlas Mountains. Skiing on these mountains takes place during mid-January to mid-February when it snows. But if you want to see the bloom of wildflowers, blue gentians, and pink and purple scabiosa (pincushions), you’d want to wait a few months until Spring.

For Marrakech events and attractions that take place indoors, the weather might not be too much of a concern. Regardless, be sure to check out basic information such as a facility’s hours of operation, whether its open year-round or seasonally, or if there are any temporary closures or not. You wouldn’t want to arrive at an attraction you greatly anticipated only to learn that is closed.

Off-Season Travel To Marrakech

While off-season travel to Marrakech may not sound enticing, there are certain advantages. There are still lots of compelling reasons to travel here during the Winter or mid-to-late Summer.

Smaller Crowds

Due to colder or hotter temperatures, there aren’t as many visitors walking through Marrakech. If you can bear the weather, you’ll get to enjoy more of this beautiful city without feeling suffocated in large crowds of tourists.

Cheaper Flights

As is common travel knowledge, flight prices go up during peak visitation times (unfair but true). You can save by booking a flight to Marrakech during the off-season.

Marrakech Attractions

There are more opportunities for sightseeing and “off-the-beaten” path attractions during the off-season. Even popular ones come alive in a different way than they would when visiting during a time that isn’t bustling with other visitors.

Marrakech: The City Awaits You

These recommendations will give you starting points in terms of when you should visit the city. Of course, you don’t need to completely follow the rules if you’re coming here for a unique purpose or want to take advantage of the off-season.

Nevertheless, good planning will enable you to experience Marrakech to the fullest, regardless of when you go. To make the most out of your trip, be sure to pack suitable clothing for the time of year, identify attractions you’d like to visit beforehand, and also consider purchasing travel insurance for emergencies. With a little planning and spontaneity mixed in, it will be a trip you won’t regret making.
