3 Incredible Day Trips You Should Take from Marrakech

The last thing a visitor might think of doing in Marrakech is taking a road trip, but doing so should sit near the top of a Morocco to-do list. Some of the most exciting adventures can occur on day trips from Marrakech to nearby cities and towns.

The variation in scenery ranging from the architecture to the landscape will dazzle visitors, and open a window into a world they may never have thought existed here. With that said, what are the best day trips from Marrakech to take?

 1. Marrakech to Essaouira

Essaouira.

A day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira is the perfect escape from the hustle-and-bustle pace of Marrakech. The journey to Essaouira lasts three hours, and upon arrival, visitors will see that the city is a beautiful coastal town nestled on Morocco’s Atlantic coast.

Travellers can navigate through the city’s vibrant blue-and-white medina or head over to its beaches to soak up the sun and the views of its colourful port and rolling waves. And when visitors have had their fill, they can lose themselves in Essaouira’s souks which are sectioned out like fish-bones and filled with a dazzling array of antiques.

 2. Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains

Atlas Mountains.

One of the best ways to appreciate the Moroccan landscape is to look at it from up high. In other words, you will see its full beauty at an elevated point, and there’s no other place to see such views than in the Atlas Mountains.

A typical day trip from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains will offer you a variety of scenery and attractions at various altitudes. For example, you may start in the tiny village of Imlil, which is nestled at the bottom of Mt. Toubkal, the highest mountain in the range. Of course, a day trip to the Atlas Mountains doesn’t have to end here.

Visitors can explore nearby Berber villages as part of a guided tour or climb the majestic, snow-capped heights of Mt.Toubkal itself. Even the trek back home to Marrakech is a visual treat, thanks to the views of the Ouirgan valley and its mix of desert, forests and the Oued Nfis river that runs through it.

 3. Marrakech to the Agafay Desert

Agafay Desert.

The next natural wonder to visit in Morocco is the Agafay Desert. The journey there is short but the stay might be a long one. It is a collage of unforgettable scenery including rolling dunes and foothills that present stunning views over the Lake Lalla Takerkoust and more. Travellers can go on camel rides, dune buggy rides, and have dinner under the evening sky and stars.
